ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of copaiba oil on jaw defects repair in Wistar rats treated with bioglass or adipose tissue. METHODS: A jaw defect was randomly created in forty-two rats and filled with bioglass or adipose tissue. The two groups (Gbio and Gcell) were subdivided in three subgroups with seven animals each according to gavage administration: control (distillated water), oil (copaiba oil) and melox (meloxicam). Euthanasia was performed after forty post-operative days. The bone formation was analyzed regarding the histological aspects. RESULTS: The osteoclasts activity was observed only in four subgroups (p=0.78). Regarding the osteoblasts presence, it was very similar between the subgroups, the difference was due to Gcell-melox (p=0.009) that presented less osteoblastic activity. The inflammatory cells were more evident in Gcell-melox subgroup, however, there was no difference in comparison with the other subgroups (p=0.52). Bone formation was observed in all subgroups, just two animals showed no bone formation even after 40 days. More than 50% of bone matrix mineralization was observed in 56% (23 animals) of the analyzed areas. The bone matrix mineralization was not different between subgroups (p=0.60). CONCLUSIONS: The subgroups that received copaiba oil showed bone repair, although not statistically significant in comparison to subgroups treated whit meloxicam or controls. Copaiba oil administered by gavage had no effect on bone repair in this experimental model. .

ABSTRACT

Bisphosphonate related osteonecrosis of jaw bones is a relatively recent discovery with the first cases being identified in 2003. Bisphosphonates are used to treat multiple conditions especially metastatic bone diseases. Although the exact mechanism of action of Bisphosphonates is not well understood yet, efficacy of these agents in reducing bone pain, hypercalcaemia and skeletal complications has been widely accepted. The recently introduced intravenous use of new generation bisphosphonates [Pamidronate and Zolidronate] has proved to be highly effective in controlling bone symptoms. The past few years have shown that osteonecrosis of jaw bones can sometimes develop in relation to long term bisphosphonate treatment, either spontaneously or by trauma caused by dental procedures. The condition presents as a diagnostic challenge being rare and not well understood. We present a case report of a 56 years old female demonstrating a possible relation between osteonecrosis of jaws and long term bisphosphonate therapy in order to create awareness of this possible complication within the medical and dental community

ABSTRACT

Bisphosphonates have been prescribed for the treatments of oncologic and metabolic bone diseases to inhibit bone resorption of osteoclasts. However, in recent years, the increased numbers of cases diagnosed with exposed and necrotic bone localized in the jawbones associated with bisphosphonate use have been reported, mostly in patients with multiple myeloma or bone metastases who received long-term intravenous bisphosphonate treatments. The strong association between patients receiving dentoalveolar surgery and the incidence of this complication highlights the need for multidisciplinary approaches and necessitates the close attention from a team of health care personnel. The present review summarizes the current knowledge on etiology, risk factors, clinical presentations, and recommended preventive measures and managements for afflicted patients. In light of recent available data and because stanterdized management strategies have not been well established, prevention seems to be of paramount benefit to this group of patients.

ABSTRACT

Osteonecrosis of thejaw (ONJ) is strongly associated with the use of aminobisphosphonates. Herein, the authors report two cases of ONJ after intravenous bisphosphonate therapy including clinical presentations, X-ray, and pathological findings. Since there is no definite treatment for ONJ, the focus should be on prevention with a dental evaluation for all patients before starting bisphosphonates.

ABSTRACT

Tadpoles of B. melanostictus and R. cyanophlyctis were reared in vitamin A solution. Rearing of the tadpoles of B. melanostictus in solutions containing 15, 20 and 30 IU/ml vitamin A palmitate resulted in complete disappearance of the keratinized epidermal material over the jaws and horny labial teeth. However tadpoles of the frog R. cyanophlyctis, were not affected in this way.
